ISO 45001

ISO 45001:2018 is the replacement of OHSAS 18001:2007. It specifies requirements for an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system. It gives guidance to helps organisations prevent work-related injuries and illnesses and provides safe and healthy workplaces. ISO 45001 can be applicable to any organisation regardless of its size, type and nature.

ISO 45001 focuses on identifying risks and opportunities, hazard identification and risk assessment, and operational controls. It enables organisation through its OH&S management system, to integrate other aspects of health and safety such as worker wellness. It provides the framework for organizations to address “communicable diseases” such as the Coronavirus. History of ISO 45001:2018

ISO 45001 is set to replace OHSAS 18001 following its publication in March 2018. BSI will formally withdraw BS OSHAS 18001 in September 2021. ISO 2018 uses the management system standard structure guideline Annex SL to allow for simplified integration with other management system standards like ISO 9001 and ISO 14001:22018.

The main changes include OHSAS 18001 was focused on managing OH&S hazards and other internal issues, but ISO 45001 concentrates on interaction between an organization and its business environment. Other differences include ISO 45001 is process-based vs OHSAS 18001 is procedure-based. ISO 45001:2018 is dynamic in all clauses vs OHSAS 18001 is not. It considers both risk and opportunities vs OHSAS 18001 mainly on risk. ISO 2018 includes the views of interested parties vs OHSAS 18001 does not
