History of ISO 50001
The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) recognised in April 2007 that industry around the world needed to take a stand in response to climate change, so UNIDO stakeholders decided to ask ISO to develop an international energy management standard.
The US Technical Advisory Group was supported by the Department of Energy (DoE) and US CEEM. This contributed to ISO 5001 remaining focused on process and data-driven energy efficiency, as well as stakeholder/management support.
In 2018, ISO released a revised version of ISO 50001. The revision is motivated by a desire to better promote the standard’s adoption by small and medium-sized businesses. Furthermore, it incorporates ISO’s high level structure, allowing organisations to combine a number of management standards, such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
